Proxy attendance

Nobody checks in for a friend.

Proxy attendance, or buddy punching, is when one employee marks attendance for another who isn’t there. Stafrix stops it twice over: check-in only works on the person’s own phone, inside your workplace radius, on server time, and Stafrix flags the patterns that give a proxy away.

How does Stafrix stop proxy attendance?

By making a check-in hard to make for someone else. Each of these is a setting you switch on in Phone check-in.

    • Only at the workplace
Check-in works only inside the radius you choose around your workplace: 50, 100, 150, 300 or 500 metres.
    • Server time
The time comes from Stafrix’s server, never the phone’s own clock, so it can’t be moved.
    • One phone, one person
A phone already used by one employee can’t check in another, and new phones can need a manager’s approval.
    • A selfie or a fingerprint
Ask for a selfie with every check-in, or the phone’s own fingerprint or face unlock.

How does Stafrix spot it when someone tries anyway?

Stafrix Intelligence watches for what proxies leave behind: one phone checking in several people, two check-ins too far apart to travel between, a location identical to the centimetre on different days, and more punches in a day than anyone needs. Each is flagged with the person and days.

Why not a register or a fingerprint machine?

A paper register can be signed for anyone, and a machine on the wall records a finger at one door while its data still has to be typed into payroll. Phone check-in records who, where and when, and goes straight into the attendance calendar and the payslip.

The workplace radius, server time and one phone per person come with every plan. Selfie and fingerprint or face check-in come with Business. Proxy alerts come with Intelligence.

    Common questions.

    What is buddy punching?

Buddy punching, or proxy attendance, is when an employee checks in or signs the register for a colleague who isn’t at work, so the absent person is paid for the day. It is common wherever attendance is a register, a shared machine or a time that anyone can write down.

Can employees fake their GPS location?

A faked location usually gives itself away. It tends to be identical to the centimetre on different days, or to jump further than anyone could travel between two check-ins. Stafrix flags both, and asking for a selfie or the phone’s fingerprint or face adds a second check.

What if an employee doesn’t have a smartphone?

A supervisor marks them in the Daily register, site by site, as present, half day or absent, and nobody on the register needs the app. Every change like that is kept in the activity log, with who made it.
